Some aspects you need to consider when selecting a Progressive Cavity Pump

April 30, 2025

When standard pumps fall short, technical advisors play a vital role in ensuring the successful implementation and functioning of projects by providing expert guidance and support. What specific mechanical, technical, and material qualities must a progressive cavity pump meet to succeed in your application? At Kronoa, this is the starting point for every tailored solution.

Understanding the real demands of your process

Industrial applications such as biogas, wastewater treatment, and sludge handling place heavy demands on pumping systems. Aspects that need to be considered, among many others are:

  • Temperature
  • Discharge pressure
  • Product viscosity, abrasiveness, pH, its origin and destination…
  • Presence of solids or fibrous materials
  • Custom installation environments (vertical, submerged, multi-inlet, etc.)
  • Industry
  • Others…

Each of these variables affects the selection of materials, rotor/stator geometry, mechanical seals and transmission systems.

Tailor-made solutions for complex applications

Kronoa’s engineering team designs custom progressive cavity pumps that go beyond catalogue performance ranges. Whether you need to pump dewatered sludge at high pressure, digestate at high temperature, or abrasive fibrous slurry with high dry matter content, the design starts with your operating conditions.

Some of the key features we adapt include:

Rotor and Stator Configuration

We define geometry ( “S” by default in our range of Premium pumps) and stage configuration depending on the required pressure and product consistency. This ensures maximum wear resistance and durability, especially in high-solids or high-pressure scenarios.

Mechanical Sealing System

Regardless of the application, balanced oil-lubricated mechanical seals prevent premature failure. These are maintenance-friendly and prevent shaft scoring often seen in shafts containing gland packing rings with simple mech seals and no roller bearing supports.

Cardan Shaft Transmission

To avoid early wear in high-torque cycles, we equip our pumps with needle-bearing cardan joints, fully greased and protected from media ingress, a design chosen for its robustness and long-term reliability.

Industrial sectors that benefit most

While many sectors could use off-the-shelf pumps, industries operating under critical conditions often require a bespoke approach:

  • Biogas: Manure, slurry and co-substrates with high fibrous content.
  • Wastewater: Dewatered sludge, abrasive grit and variable flow.
  • Industrial processes: Chemical resistance, special coatings or integrated control.

Let's specify the right quality for you

We don’t expect you to adapt your process to the pump, we engineer the pump to fit your process. By analysing your requirements, our team can specify the correct material combinations, geometries and accessories needed for optimal performance and reduced downtime.
